How to Get to Cambutal, Panama
Driving directions, bus routes, and the nearest airports for reaching Cambutal on the southern Azuero Peninsula in Los Santos, Panama.
Cambutal sits at the remote southern tip of Panama's Azuero Peninsula, in the district of Tonosí, Los Santos province. Getting there takes some effort — which is exactly why the beaches stay quiet and uncrowded. Here is how to make the trip.
By car from Panama City
Driving is the most flexible option and takes roughly five to six hours. From Panama City, follow the Pan-American Highway (Interamericana) west toward the Azuero, then head south through Chitré and Las Tablas. From Las Tablas, the road continues south to Tonosí, and a final stretch leads down to the coast at Cambutal.
The roads are paved most of the way and the final approach is straightforward, though it is best to arrive in daylight your first time. A standard car is fine in the dry season; in the green season a higher-clearance vehicle adds peace of mind for the occasional stream crossing on side roads.
Nearest airports
- Captain Scarlett Martínez International (Río Hato, RIH) — a useful regional gateway on the Pacific coast, then a drive south into the Azuero.
- Chitré (Alonso Valderrama, CTD) — small domestic airport in the heart of the Azuero, the closest commercial strip to Tonosí.
- Tocumen International (PTY), Panama City — the main international hub; most visitors fly here, then drive or connect onward.
By bus
Public buses connect Panama City's Albrook terminal to Las Tablas and Chitré. From there, regional buses and shared transport run toward Tonosí, with onward connections to the Cambutal coast. Budget extra time for transfers — service to the southern coast is less frequent than on the main Azuero loop.
Planning your arrival
Cambutal is a small coastal village, so stock up on cash, groceries, and fuel in Las Tablas or Tonosí before the final descent to the beach. Mobile coverage exists but can be patchy. Once you arrive, the pace slows right down — which is the whole point.
