Things to Do in Cambutal

Beyond the beach — surfing, fishing, sea-turtle nesting at Isla de Cañas, Cerro Hoya National Park, waterfalls, and slow coastal living in Cambutal, Panama.

Cambutal rewards travelers who like their nature wild and their days unhurried. The village itself is tiny, but the surrounding coast and mountains of the southern Azuero offer a surprising amount to explore.

Surf and swim

The beach is the heart of Cambutal — long, dramatic, and largely empty. It's a place for surfing, beach walks at low tide, and watching the sun drop into the Pacific. (See our dedicated guide to surfing in Cambutal.)

Sportfishing

The nearby waters are renowned for roosterfish, tuna, dorado, and snapper. A guided charter is one of the highlights of any visit to this coast.

Sea turtles at Isla de Cañas

A short distance up the coast, Isla de Cañas is one of Panama's most important sea-turtle nesting sites, where thousands of olive ridley turtles come ashore in seasonal arribadas. Visiting with a local guide during nesting season is an unforgettable, respectful way to witness one of nature's great spectacles.

Cerro Hoya National Park

The remote Cerro Hoya National Park protects rugged forested mountains meeting the sea at the peninsula's tip — rich in birdlife and endemic species. It's wild, lightly visited terrain best explored with local knowledge.

Waterfalls and the hills

Inland from the coast, seasonal rivers and waterfalls cut through the green hills around Tonosí — a refreshing counterpoint to the salt and surf, especially in the green season.

Slow down

Maybe the best thing to do in Cambutal is the least: read in a hammock, share fresh fish with new friends, and let the rhythm of the tides set your schedule.
